The Construction Lab

The Construction Lab is situated on the Arlington Square site adjacent to the Margate School of Architecture to form the Margate Creative Campus . The Construction Lab aims to provide the means for members of the local community to develop or utilise hands on, practical skills to increase employability and engage in the regeneration of Margate. Taking influence from community build projects the centre will offer a community construction schemes that will take part within the local area, utilising the city as the campus. This is will be supported by facilities including large timber and bricklaying workshops, material storage, an outside construction yard, teaching and induction rooms, a design studio , technical library and 3D Printing and CNC machine rooms.

The timber lattice and truss patterned facade forms the main visual feature both inside and outside the building envelope. The design motivation was to portray a crafted aesthetic surrounding the architecture and to mirror the construction lab’s community build programmes and ethos.
